Building a well designed web site is only part of building your online business. Your site must be user friendly, as well as search engine friendly. The users look at a site on the surface, focusing on visual aspects of the site including pictures, flash etc., however, the search engines look at the source code of the site and uses that information for ranking your site on the internet.
There is a balance we must consider here. we must make our site appealing to the user, but also the search engine spiders. The cosmetics of the site is strictly for eye appeal to the user, however, we must make sure there's plenty of relevant content in our site to get our message across to the reader. The search engines weighs that relevant content, the linking within the site, the keywords and may other critical parts in their algorithm, so that your site will be indexed properly. You should build you site in HTML format, because it's easier for the search engines spiders to read. By including a sitemap in your site, the search engines will find this vital information much quicker.
Keywords play a crucial role in the successful indexing for your site by the search engines. Finding the right keywords or keyword phrases is one of the first things you must focus on. When I first started on line, I would literally spend several hours per day, for two or three days, searching for exactly the right keywords for the campaign I was about to pursue. Even then, I would miss some very important keywords and have to add additional keywords as time went by. I found that by looking at my competitors sites, I could get some excellent ideas of what keywords they were using to get good page ranking. Using the most popular keywords may not be the best course of action when trying to gain page rank. Sometimes a less popular keyword or keyword phrase, can be more effective. Consider using, keyword variations, such as plurals, synonyms and hyphenated words.
It is recommended that you include, relevant keywords in the title of your site, meta tag description, as well as in the content of your page. These keywords must be positioned in a way that will make the text flow, with relevant information about your business opportunity. You should not use more than 5-7% of keywords, in the content section of your site. Using more keywords than this recommended ratio, may be considered as spam, and the search engine will penalize you substantially, or maybe even ban your site altogether. Again, a word of caution here, spread your keywords throughout your content area of your site, and maintain the recommended percentages we discussed earlier, to avoid points off for keyword stuffing.
Once you have constructed your web site, and your comfortable with the appearance of the site, now comes the fun part of this whole process. Promoting your site and earning Top Positions on Google and other search engines. It is recommended that you hand index your site to at least the three major search engine. Google, Yahoo and Bing are the most popular engines, and most of the other search engines use the information from the big three databases, to position your site with the best page rank possible. These algorithms are very technical, so don't try to understand their whole system before taking the plunge. By the time you learn all the particulars of how algorithms work, the search engine will change the process again. They change their structure frequently, to avoid the more knowledgeable marketers, with an unfair advantage over less informed web site owners. Follow the basic guidelines of the search engines as we're discussing here, and you shouldn't get into any trouble.
Once you've followed the process of building your site correctly and published it live online, don't get excited if your site doesn't appear immediately online. It may take weeks, or even months before you see your site appearing on the web. This is particularly true if you are using a brand new domain. Search engines like aged domains, that have been around for awhile. This gives the engines a certain amount of trust in the longevity of your web site. Don't despair....this is just part of the process.
The three main meta tags are: The Title Tag, the Keyword Meta Tag, and the Description Meta Tag. By following the simple suggestions we've talked about here today, you will see some important changes in your popularity with the search engines rather quickly.
This is a never ending learning process, however, it will only be, as good as you make it. Commit to learning how marketing works, and it will be extremely rewarding, both in the mind.....and bank account. Good Luck in your new venture of online marketing.
