What is Anchor Text? There are all many different opinions, on what an anchor text is, and what it's function in search engine optimization really is. The following is a quote; From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
"The anchor text, link label or link title is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. The words contained in the anchor text can determine the ranking that the page will receive by search engines. Since 1998, some web browsers have added the ability to show a tooltip for a hyperlink before it is selected. Not all links have anchor texts because it may be obvious where the link will lead due to the context in which it is used. Anchor texts normally remain below 60 characters. Different browsers will display anchor texts differently."
Most people assume the anchor text is related somehow to the actual text of the URL. This is not necessarily so, because an anchor text gives contextual information about where the link points. By giving a short, relevant, descriptive, informative summary of the site, will enhance the search results with the engines. Try to keep this description under sixty characters. This may sound confusing at first, however, if one looks at the overall concept of the anchor text and how it affects the results of a query, it starts to make a lot more sense. Once you understand about anchor text and their function in the algorithms the search engines, you will begin to understand why the engines put so much emphasis on this segment of optimization.
Some webmasters feel that by using the phrase "click here", will be adequate wording to produce goods results. I personally don't think agree with that theory. Others feel that putting "click here" instead of a descriptive name, is a poor search engine optimization practice. I totally agree that a descriptive name, is more search engine friendly. The search engines may look at a site that is linked with identical anchor text, and the position of that site may appear toward the top of the searches for that particular phrase. Search engines use anchor text, to index the content of a linked to site, especially, if the content of that site is relevant to what your talking about. Don't overuse a words or word phrase....you may be penalized for keywords stuffing, or spam.
